Steve McCurry

Sharbat Gula, Pakistan, 1984 Posted by Hello

For almost two decades, Steve McCurry has received letters, telephone calls, and e-mail inquiries about the Afghan girl, Sharbat Gula, first pictured on the cover of National Geographic Magazine, and later in publications around the world.

When Steve and a team from National Geographic found her again, there was an unprecedented outpouring of generosity to the Afghan Girls Fund administered by the National Geographic Society and the Asia Foundation. Girls who had been deprived of an education are now in school and are learning to read and write and become self-sufficient.

The Society recently made it possible for Sharbat and her family and friends to go to Mecca for the Hajj which fulfilled her lifelong dream. Her other dream was that her children have an education. That dream is also coming true.
