The portrait of this famous French painter shows the artist in front of one of his later circular paintings. Delaunay's use of color and abstraction helped move the world of art from the soft and pleasant features of Impressionism to the brasher tone of Contemporary art. He died of cancer in 1941. His wife Sonia Terk, who was a textile designer, influenced her husband and he influenced her. By the 1930s he had arrived at a purely self-sufficient language of geometric forms. He remained active as a theoretician until the end of his life, leaving a legacy of influential writings on the development of abstract art.
