The tragic story of the Fontanelle Family was detailed by Parks in a LIFE magazine story of 1968, though the story went on even after the magazine raised money for the family. Here they are pictured at the Welfare Office. A number of the children pictured here died later. Parks felt such a personal attachment to this photo that he had it in his personal collection. It hung in his home in the same frame until his death in 2006. A copy of the LIFE article accompanies the print. A typed label appears on brown paper on verso of mat: "*Gordon Parks/Bessie Fontenelle and Children at the Welfare/ Office, New York/1968/Silver print.'11 x 14 in./Lent by the Artist"
