Mario De Biasi was born in the mountains close to Belluno in 1923 and soon moved to Milan to study and work in the field of radio engineering until 1944, when he was captured by the Germans and deported to Nuremburg: it was there that his interest in photography first sparked. After the war he joined the editorial staff of “Epoca”, a new sort of weekly magazine. On behalf of “Epoca”, De Biasi travelled through the world, bearing witness to such historical events as the Hungarian revolt in 1956, wars and disasters, but also recounting stories from people’s daily life, of the beauty found in nature and in architecture. Italy, Milan and portraits are the themes he most frequently dealt with. These last ones constitute intriguing characters and psychological studies, a “Pantheon” that has yet to be fully revealed. The talent of Mario De Biasi was well explained by Bruno Munari who wrote about him: ”The camera is as much a part of his body as his nose and eyes”. De Biasi still lives and works in Milano.
