Kurt Markus (Roundup, Montana, 1947) has been a photographer for twenty years. He has won major awards for both his editorial, advertising and personal work, all of which has been collected in many photographic anthologies such as Martin Harrisons Appearances and Kelly Klein’s Underworld. Markus has created advertising campaigns for Armani, Esprit, Levi Strauss, Yohji Yamamoto, Kodak, Polaroid, Calvin Klein, Nike, Sony and Timberland among others; his photographs have been published in the most important magazines worldwide such as “Amica”, “British Vogue”, “Australian Vogue”, “Interview”, “German Marie-Claire”, “New York Times Magazine” and “The New Yorker”. One of the distinctive traits in Kurt Markus’ photographs is that he seeks to capture his subjects as they appear rather than searching for an unseen aspect of a model or of the landscape. The eyes obscured by shadow and the play of natural forms upon the body are enough to create the drama, resulting in a serenity and languid poise that would evade a more temporal artist. Today he lives and works in Montana.
