Morogoro, 05/18/2007.- A Tanzanian trainer who works for Apopo works with a leashed African Giant Pouched Rat, sweeping him across a field that has simulated land mines. When the rat smells explosives, it signals by pawing at the dirt in that spot. The trainer uses a clicker and the rat rushes over for a bite of banana for it's reward. Where real land mines are being detected, the found mine would be recorded on a map, then later technicians explode the mines safely. This training facility is near the Sokoine University of Agriculture in Morogoro, Tanzania. Apopo (the company that trains rats for mine detection) was started by Bart Weetjens, a Belgium who has had a lifelong fasination with rodents.
