Lima, 08/31/2007.- Luis Romero stands in his adobe home in Barrios Altos in downtown Lima, The magnitude-8 quake that struck Peru killed more than 500 people and destroyed 40,000 homes, but it would have been much, much worse had it struck closer to the nation's capital, a metropolis of 8 million people where many live in tall apartment buildings constructed on sandy soil with little more than adobe and reeds.
